How the US jobs report signals impending economic distress, explained in 5 points

A new report released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday (September 5) indicated that job growth in America has hit a slowdown, with employers creating only 22,000 positions in August. The unemployment rate in August reached 4.3%, the highest since 2021.

The report may have provided the first signs of the impact of President Donald Trump’s economic policy. Here are five insights:

1. Negative data for the first time since 2020

The report showed that the US lost 13,000 jobs in June, marking the first time it went into the negative since December 2020, when Covid was well underway.

The BLS revised its previous estimates of June data, which reported an addition of 139,000 jobs to the US economy. The latest report indicates that the actual addition for that month was -13,000, meaning it had lost jobs during the period. Similar revisions for July’s jobs data saw an actual increase from 73,000 to 79,000.

The bureau attributed the revisions to a double-counting of data as it received additional reports from employers, mainly business and government agencies. Economists have further attributed these revisions to the “birth and death” model used by the BLS to estimate the net additions to jobs due to companies opening or closing in a particular month.

In August, Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, the bureau chief, and claimed the numbers were “rigged” to make him look bad.

2. How different sectors performed

Sectors including information, financial activities, federal government and business services, posted outright declines.

Story continues below this ad

In contrast, job additions were made in healthcare, leisure and hospitality industries. However, these sectors may also face the risk of hiring slowdowns, even as the Trump administration pursues Medicaid cuts and reduced social assistance funding in the months to come, according to Laura Ullrich, director of economic research for North America at Indeed.

Manufacturing jobs, which Trump has repeatedly promised to restore, fell by 12,000 and are now down by 78,000 over the year. However, this need not necessarily be a sign of things going wrong, with economists pointing to a sign of long-term trends alongside increased production underway.

“As you get better at making manufactured product – that is productivity growth – you don’t need as many people to make the same things you did before,” Chad Syverson, Economics professor at the University of Chicago, told USA Today.

However, the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration, evidenced by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on Friday (September 5) on a Hyundai factory under construction in Georgia, may have played a direct hand. Similarly, declining consumer confidence and Trump’s evolving tariff policies may motivate manufacturers to revise their plans and refrain from adding staff to their payroll.

3. Rising racial gap in unemployment

The unemployment rate for black Americans rose by 0.3% over the previous month to reach 7.5% in August, over double the unemployment rates of white Americans (3.7%) and Asian Americans (3.5%). The unemployment rate of Hispanic Americans stood at 5.3% as well.

The relatively higher unemployment rates of Black and Hispanic Americans should serve as a warning about the signs of economic distress underway. The numbers also indicate that the “last hired, first fired” phenomenon affecting Black Americans is likely underway, implying that they are the first to feel the impact of an economic downturn, and the last to recover from one. Black and Hispanic Americans were disproportionately affected during the Great Recession.

4. First signs of the DOGE impact

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the quasi-government agency entrusted with reducing wasteful government expenditure, has slashed 97,000 federal jobs since January. The latest report indicates a decline of 15,000 government jobs in August alone.

5. Signs of broader weakness

The report indicated that the average weekly hours in August declined to 34.2 hours, a potential sign that employers were demanding less labour. A corresponding rise in the labour force participation rate was recorded for August, with the share of the American population actively working or looking for work increasing to 62.3%.

Story continues below this ad

A high participation rate in a healthy economy indicates a transitional period, meaning workers are seeking jobs, but not enough jobs are being created right away to match this demand. During a period of impending economic distress, this understanding is upended, and job-seekers may be seeking work, possibly due to the nature of impending financial stress. Which way this trend unfolds will become clear in the months to come.

IBJA’s Prithviraj Kothari sees silver reaching $70 per ounce within a year

Silver is showing signs of renewed strength after a decade of slow activity, according to Prithviraj Kothari, President of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd. (IBJA). Kothari sees $40 per ounce as a base price for silver and expects it could rise to $70 per ounce within a year.

“I am more bullish on silver than on gold,” he added.

On the gold front, Kothari noted robust buying activity in the market, driven by geopolitical tensions, central bank policies, and efforts towards de-dollarisation. He also observed that some investors are selling cryptocurrency holdings to purchase gold.

“Everyone is buying, no one is selling in the market right now,” he said.

Gold prices have risen by nearly $200 in the past week. Kothari projected that gold could reach $3,700–$3,800 per ounce by the end of 2025 and might even touch $4,000–$4,500 per ounce in the longer term.

Physical demand for gold remains strong, and gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are accumulating metal. Similarly, silver is also seeing significant accumulation in ETFs.

Commenting on market liquidity, Kothari said there are no concerns. A good monsoon has led to new crops and increased cash flow in the market, which he believes will not negatively impact imports.

BCCI Breaks Silence On Facing Pakistan At Asia Cup Despite Outrage: "India Is Not Playing With..."

Amid ongoing backlash over India squaring off against Pakistan in the Asia Cup on September 14 in Dubai, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia cited the recently issued policy and stated that the central government has not restricted participation against any nation that is not on friendly terms with India in multinational tournaments. The outrage over India facing their arch-rival stems from anger over the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 tourists were killed on April 22 by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. Former cricketers and fans have voiced their discontent with the fixture, with some even calling for boycotting the match.

In August, the central government revised its policy regarding Indian athletes competing against Pakistani athletes in sports events. According to the new guidelines, India will be allowed to participate in multinational events but will continue to refrain from bilateral competitions with hostile nations.

“So far as the BCCI's view is concerned, we have to follow whatever the central government formalises. Recently, our policy—regarding India's participation in any multinational or international tournament—clearly states that there are no restrictions imposed by the central government on playing against countries not on friendly terms with India. So, India has to play all matches in any multinational tournament,” Saikia told ANI exclusively.

“As the Asia Cup is a multinational tournament involving countries from the Asian continent, we have to participate. Similarly, in any ICC tournament, even if it involves a country not on good terms with India, we are required to play. As far as bilateral ties are concerned, we are not going to play against any hostile nation,” he added.

Saikia stressed that the Indian cricket board will continue to adhere to the policy formalised by the government. He highlighted the repercussions the nation could face if it boycotts fixtures against Pakistan in global tournaments across different sports disciplines, which involves the possibility of facing sanctions.

"So we are following the policy framed by the government of India, the Youth and Sports Development Department. So, the policy we are following we are totally in alignment with the policy framed by the central government. And for that, BCCI will have to do it. And we are very happy to follow the policy. And that policy is very nicely done, taking into consideration not only cricket, but also other games," he said.

"If you think that if India boycotts any of the multinational tournaments hosted by the Asian Cricket Council or the ICC, or if you take any other sports, suppose a FIFA tournament or an AFC tournament or any other, suppose, athletic tournament involving multinational teams, and India is not playing with a particular country, then there may be sanctions against the Indian Federation," Saikia added.

To further clear his stance, Saikia explained the repercussions the Athletics Federation of India and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra could face if he opts out of competing in a tournament that features his Pakistan counterpart.

"That will actually go against the players of that particular event. Suppose, taking an example, suppose in athletics, India is not playing a particular tournament because we have to play with a player belonging to a hostile country. In that situation, if any sanction comes with the Indian Athletic Association, then take the example, suppose Neeraj Chopra, he won't be able to participate in any international event. So that will be detrimental to the interests of the players," he said.

"I am sure the government of India has taken into consideration all these factors while formulating the policy that allows India to participate, not only in cricket but also in other games, in various multinational tournaments," Saikia concluded.

Baaghi 4 worldwide box office collection day 1: Tiger Shroff film opens at just ₹17 crore, far less than Baaghi 3

Baaghi 4 worldwide box office collection day 1: Tiger Shroff's Baaghi 4 arrived with high hopes for the franchise, given that the previous films have been huge hits at the box office. Can the latest entry into the franchise take that forward? If worldwide collections of the opening day are taken into account, it seems box office returns have not been kind to the A Harsha film. The film has started on an underwhelming note on its opening day, just past the 15 crore mark worldwide.

Baaghi 4 worldwide box office

Baaghi 4 collected 12 crore on its opening day in India. Meanwhile, the Indian gross collection stood at 14.15 crore. The film collected an additional 3 crore overseas, thereby taking its total worldwide collection to 17.15 crore, as per Sacnilk.

In comparison, Baaghi 3, which was released in 2020, collected 26.50 crore worldwide on its first day of release. Baaghi 4 has, however, crossed the opening day figures of Sunny Deol's Jaat ( 13 crore) and Akshay Kumar's Sky Force ( 15 crore). It is still far behind Salman Khan's Sikandar, which had opened at 54 crore worldwide, three times the day 1 haul of Baaghi 4.

About Baaghi 4

Baaghi 4 is directed by A Harsha and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt and Harnaaz Sandhu in pivotal roles. Shreyas Talpade, Saurabh Sachdeva, Upendra Limaye, and Sonam Bajwa round out the cast.

The action thriller is the fourth instalment in Tiger Shroff's Baaghi, which was first released in 2016. It received mostly mixed reviews upon release, with many comparing the action to Ranbir Kapoor's Animal and calling out the excessive violence being shown on screen.

Param Sundari: New Bollywood romcom sparks debate over stereotyping south India

A new Bollywood film has reignited an age-old conversation around how India's largest and most influential film industry represents characters from non-Hindi speaking states.

Param Sundari, a romcom starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, is a love story between a woman from the southern state of Kerala and a man from Delhi in northern India.

Param and Sundari first butt heads and then fall in love, successfully overcoming the cultural differences between them.

The idea isn't new: Bollywood has long explored north-south cultural clashes through romcoms, and in a multilingual country, well-executed cross-cultural romances can be a hit.

But in this case, critics and social media users from Kerala and beyond have called out the film for its caricatured depiction of the state, particularly Sundari.

Played by Kapoor, Sundari often wears a string of jasmine flowers in her hair, can communicate with elephants and climbs coconut trees as a hobby - all stereotypical traits, often associated with Kerala. Though she's lived there most of her life, her Malayalam is atrocious.

The criticism began as soon as the film's trailer was shared, with many puzzling over Sundari seemingly mispronouncing her own name. This also invited comparison with another much-derided character, Shalini Unnikrishnan (played by Adah Sharma), from the controversial film The Kerala Story.

In both films, the heroines, despite living in Kerala, speak Hindi and are unable to speak fluent Malayalam when they break into it.

A few minutes into Param Sundari, when Param's friend learns that they will be visiting a village in Kerala called Nangiarkulangara, he exaggeratedly pronounces the name and asks, "Where is that? Africa?", combining stereotypes and casual racism into one question.

Once in Kerala, the film whizzes through a checklist of things a layperson might associate with the tourist-favourite state - its famous backwaters, the ubiquitous coconut trees, toddy, elephants, and Onam, its most popular festival.

One reviewer called the film "a feature-length ad for Kerala tourism" that "gleefully bulldozes over all possibilities of any cultural nuance".

The film brims with coconut gags: Param and Sundari first meet by a tree, she vents her anger by furiously harvesting coconuts, and he finally confesses his love from atop one.

For many viewers, cultural inauthenticity is not a dealbreaker.

Rajiv, from northern Bihar state, saw Param Sundari as a fun window into an unfamiliar culture, saying its portrayals may not be true to life but chasing authenticity can dull entertainment.

"Maybe this will change gradually. But this much artistic freedom is okay to make the movie interesting," he said.

For others, however, the film's attempt to educate audiences is half-hearted.

In a blistering review, critic Sowmya Rajendran slammed the film as "generic, exhausting and offensive," saying it hides tired cliches behind an "exotic" Kerala setting and a score that overplays the land's "foreignness."

Films often face and survive casting criticisms: Chennai Express (2013) was panned by critics but soared at the box office.

When the makers of Mary Kom (2014) cast Priyanka Chopra to play the role of the Olympic medal-winning boxer from Manipur state, it was met with plenty of criticism. Chopra herself admitted later that "in hindsight, the part should have gone to someone from the northeast". But the film was a hit and Chopra won awards for her spirited performance.

And Mehmood's 1968 Padosan caricature of a Tamil singer remains a classic.

But the landscape of Indian entertainment has shifted: post-pandemic cinema closures and the rise of streaming have left Bollywood struggling for hits, with big-budget flops shaking its dominance.

Non-Hindi films now reach nationwide audiences via Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, earning fans through dubbed versions, while big Bollywood releases no longer dominate cinema primetime.

Since its release, Param Sundari has earned steadily but slowly, while the Malayalam female-superhero film Lokah has become a superhit with praise for its innovative plot and execution.

In her article on Param Sundari, writer Cris notes how many Indian film industries accept actors playing roles outside their own cultures.

"It is when the characters look like caricatures of a state or its people that the audience takes offence," she writes.

Param Sundari does try to balance its storytelling. More than once, Sundari gets to school Param and his friend about their assumptions about her state – in one instance, throwing bias back at them about "ignorant, illiterate, arrogant, entitled" north Indians.

Courtesy Cannes Film Festival A still from the film All We Imagine As Light directed by Payal KapadiaCourtesy

Commentators point to strong examples in India's mobile society: Godha (2017) skilfully tells a cross-cultural romance of a Punjabi wrestler in Kerala; Axone (2019) tackles discrimination faced by people from north-eastern India with wit; Qarib Qarib Single (2017) follows a Malayali woman in Mumbai; and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light (2024) portrays immigrant struggles with nuance.

Bollywood isn't alone: Writer and poet Aleena notes Malayalam cinema has stereotyped tribespeople, Dalits (formerly untouchables), and Tamil characters, while Hindi speakers are often caricatured in southern films.

"I think this is a larger question of power dynamics and representation," Aleena says, emphasising a community's role in shaping its own stories.

She says that when a story portrays a community without including the real voices of people from the community, its risks becoming skewed and imbalanced.

"We need to make people participants or stakeholders in the art we are trying to make."

'The Conjuring: Last Rites' box office collection Day 1: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga's horror film SHATTERS records with Rs 18 crore India debut

The final outing of everyone's paranormal investigators - Ed and Lorraine Warren - has struck gold at the Indian box office. 'The Conjuring: Last Rites', stormed theatres on Friday, registering a record-breaking Rs 18 crore net debut according to early estimates on sacnilk. The film that faced some stiff competition at the Indian box office, as it clashed with domestic releases like 'Baaghi 4' and 'The Bengal Files', managed to hold its own, and rake in a gross estimated collection of approximately Rs 21 crore, across all languages on its opening day. With this, the film has instantly secured its place as the biggest ever Hollywood horror opener in India.

Occupancy and screen count

The strong start was reflected in occupancy rates. In English 2D formats, the film posted an overall 61.10% occupancy, beginning with 44% for morning shows and peaking at a stellar 78% for night screenings. Hindi versions also performed solidly, with an overall 49.61% occupancy. Meanwhile, other formats, including the 4DX format, scored as high as 91% occupancy in theatres in the country. With a rollout across 2,200+ screens nationwide, the film has set a new benchmark for horror releases in India.

Audience response

Backed by the fact that the film will be the final chapter in the franchise, it's opening-day buzz translated into packed houses across multiplexes and single screens alike.

Evening and late-night shows, in particular, witnessed heavy turnout. Great word of mouth and good reviews boosted strong advance bookings, which was also reported to be the highest ever for a horror release in India.

Star cast and direction

Directed by Michael Chaves, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' sees Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren. This time around, they are joined by Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy, who anchor the final chapter.

Competition at the box office

The film outperformed its Bollywood rivals with ease. 'Baaghi 4' and 'The Bengal Files' proved to be no match for this epic horror saga with the actioner earning around Rs 12 crore while the political drama took home an estiamted Rs 1.75 crore net.The horror thriller also surpassed the opening of Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan’s 'Shaitaan', which earned Rs 17.50 crore on day one last year.

Global box office

Internationally, the movie is eyeing an equally impressive start, with reports projecting an estimated $50 million and $55 million opening weekend. Overseas markets spanning 66 territories are expected to generate another $50 million, potentially pushing the worldwide debut beyond the $100 million mark.

Hitting the Rs 100 crore mark

Industry experts predict 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' could soon enter the Rs 100 crore club in India, becoming the first Hollywood horror title to do so. If it continues to maintain its pace through the weekend, the film could also rewrite the record books for horror movies in the country.DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers in this article are compiled from our proprietary sources and diverse public data.
